Understand every possible status result and exactly what to do next. No jargon, no confusion.

Status: Approved

Your application has been approved. Payment will be processed during the payment window (26th–31st of the month). Ensure your banking details are correct and your account is active. If you chose Cash Send or retail, check your SMS for collection details.

Good news — no action needed

Status: Pending

SASSA is still verifying your information against 9 government databases (Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, CIPC, GEPF, banks, credit bureaus, SAFPS). This can take 1–90 days. About 80% of applicants see this status initially. No action needed unless it persists beyond 90 days.

Be patient — check back weekly

Status: Declined

Your application was not approved this month. This could be due to income above R624/month, receiving other grants, failed identity check, or screening question answers. You can appeal within 90 days or reapply next month — declines reset monthly.

Action required — see decline codes below
🔍

Status: Referred

Your application has been sent to the Department of Home Affairs for additional identity verification. This happens when your ID details don't fully match. About 90% of referred applications are eventually approved. Wait time: 2–6 weeks.

Patience needed — 90% resolve positively
💰

Approved — But No Payment

If your status says "Approved" but you haven't received money, common causes include: incorrect banking details, closed or dormant bank account, Cash Send not activated, or payment still processing. Verify your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za and allow 3–5 business days after the 26th.

Reconfirmation Required

Every 3 months, SASSA requires you to reconfirm your grant. If you miss the reconfirmation window, your grant is paused (not cancelled). Log into srd.sassa.gov.za to reconfirm. You do not need to submit a new application.

How to Check Your SASSA Status

Step-by-step guide to checking your SRD grant status online.

1

Visit the Official SRD Portal

Go to srd.sassa.gov.za on your phone or computer. Only use this official website — never check status on other sites that ask for personal details.

2

Click "Application Status"

On the homepage, tap or click the "Application Status" or "Check Status" button. This takes you to the status check form.

3

Enter Your 13-Digit ID Number

Type your full South African ID number exactly as it appears on your ID document. Double-check every digit — one wrong number will show no results.

4

Enter Your Cellphone Number

Use the same number you registered with when applying. If you changed your number, update it first at srd.sassa.gov.za before checking status.

5

View Your Result

Your status will display as Approved, Pending, Declined, or Referred. Scroll up to our Status School to understand what your result means and what to do next.

💡

Best times to check: The portal is busiest between 8 AM–2 PM. For faster loading, try before 6 AM or after 10 PM. You can also use WhatsApp (082 046 8553) or USSD (*134*7737#) during peak times.

Common Decline Codes Explained

If your status shows "Declined," here's what the reason code means and how to fix it.

Self Exclusion Response Found
You answered a screening question in a way that disqualifies you (e.g., said you earn above R624/month or receive UIF).
Fix: Reapply next month and answer the screening questions carefully.
Identity Verification Failed
Your details don't match Home Affairs records. Common if your name was recently changed or you have an old ID.
Fix: Visit Home Affairs to update records, then appeal with proof.
Applicant Receiving Government Funds
SASSA's system shows you receive UIF, NSFAS, or another grant. Even expired records can trigger this.
Fix: Get a clearance letter from UIF/NSFAS and appeal.
Registered as CIPC Director
You're registered as a company director with CIPC, even if the company is dormant or deregistered.
Fix: Deregister at CIPC or appeal with proof of no income.
Income Above Threshold
SARS records show income above R624/month. Bank transaction data may also trigger this flag.
Fix: Appeal with bank statements proving income is below R624.
Applicant Not Within Age Range
You're under 18 or over 59. The SRD grant is only for people aged 18–59. Over 60 should apply for the Older Persons Grant.
Fix: If your age is wrong, update at Home Affairs.

Appeals: You have 90 days from the decline date to submit an appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals. Include supporting documents (bank statements, clearance letters, Home Affairs proof). Appeals typically take 30–60 days to process.

Am I Eligible for the SRD Grant?

You must meet all of these requirements to qualify for the R370 SRD grant.

Age 18–59 — You must be between 18 and 59 years old. If you're 60 or older, apply for the Older Persons Grant instead.
South African Citizen or Legal Resident — SA citizens, permanent residents, refugees with Section 22 permits, and special permit holders qualify.
Income Below R624/month — You must be unemployed or earning less than R624 per month. SASSA checks this against SARS and bank records.
Not Receiving Other SASSA Grants — You cannot receive both SRD and another grant. Exception: Child Support Grant recipients can also get SRD.
Not Receiving UIF or NSFAS — No active UIF benefits or NSFAS student funding. Even old records can cause issues — get clearance letters if needed.
Not in a Government Institution — You must not be residing in a government-funded institution such as a prison, psychiatric hospital, or care home.
Valid 13-Digit SA ID Number — You need a valid South African identity number. Asylum seekers can use their Section 22 permit number instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common SASSA SRD grant questions.

Visit srd.sassa.gov.za, click "Application Status," enter your 13-digit SA ID number and the cellphone number you used during application. Your current status (Approved, Pending, Declined, or Referred) will display immediately. You can also check via WhatsApp (send "Status" to 082 046 8553) or USSD (*134*7737#).
Pending means SASSA is still verifying your information against multiple government databases including Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS, CIPC, and credit bureaus. This is normal and can take 1–90 days. About 80% of applicants see Pending initially. No action is needed from your side — just check back weekly.
SRD R370 payments are processed between the 26th and last day of each month. Bank deposits typically arrive on the 26th. Cash Send payments take 1–2 additional days. Retail collection (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Boxer) becomes available 2–3 days after. If you haven't received payment by month end, check your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za.
Yes. The SRD grant is reassessed monthly. A decline in one month does not prevent approval the next month. You can also appeal within 90 days at srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals. Check the decline reason code first — if it's something you can fix (like a bank mismatch or screening question error), address it before reapplying.
The SASSA SRD grant is R370 per month as of the 2026 National Budget. This amount was increased from R350 in October 2024. The grant has been extended until March 2027. There is currently no confirmed increase planned for April 2026.
Yes. The Child Support Grant is the only SASSA grant you can receive alongside the SRD R370. All other SASSA grants (Old Age, Disability, Foster Child, Grant-in-Aid, War Veterans, Care Dependency) disqualify you from receiving SRD.
First, wait until the last day of the month — payments are processed in batches. If still no payment: verify your banking details at srd.sassa.gov.za (name must match your ID exactly), check that your bank account is active and not dormant, and ensure Cash Send is activated if you chose that option. If everything is correct, call SASSA at 0800 60 10 11.
Yes. SASSA requires reconfirmation every 3 months. You'll receive an SMS reminder. Log into srd.sassa.gov.za to reconfirm. If you miss the reconfirmation window, your grant will be paused (not cancelled). You can reconfirm at any time to restart payments — you do not need to submit a new application.
Yes, checking your status is completely free on the official portal at srd.sassa.gov.za, via WhatsApp, or USSD. SASSA never charges for status checks or applications. If anyone asks for payment, it is a scam. Report scams to the SASSA fraud hotline at 0800 60 10 11.
eKYC (electronic Know Your Customer) is biometric verification using your fingerprint or a facial scan (selfie). Since September 2025, it is mandatory for all SRD applicants to prevent fraud. You can complete eKYC on your smartphone via the srd.sassa.gov.za portal or visit a SASSA office if your phone camera doesn't support it.
